"MiG-35" and "MiG-35D" for Indian MMRCA tender, 2009
Read more here

The so called MiG-35 (single-seater) and MiG-35D (double-seater) are the "4++" generation multi-role fighters, members of the unified family, development of the MiG-29K/KUB. Airframes are unified with them, but enlarged folded wings are fixed. Nine external hard points for weapons, increased fuel capacity, in-flight refueling and possibility of using as a tanker, three-channel fly-by-wire control system, smokeless engines RD-33MK, IRST system with infra-red, TV and laser equipment integrated with new helmet-mounted target designation system. Full range of Russian and possible foreign weapons, targeting pods etc.

Airframes are based on 9-41 and 9-47 with folded (but fixed), wider (MiG-29 = 11,36 m, 9-41, 9-47, 9-61, 9-67 = 11,99 m) wings and bigger stabilizators. In fact 9-61 and 9-67 were builded using two airframes of serial MiGs produced for Indian Navy (MiG-29K/KUB).

Both aircraft 9-61 and 9-67 are prepared in 2009 to win Indian tender for MMRCA in 2010, but failed in January 2012.

serial MiG-29M/M2
9-61 / 9-67
since 2017

In 2014 Egypt, facing with unoficial US sanctions, want new aircraft from France or Russia to replace old MiGs-21M/MF/UM. In March 2014 Egypt decided to buy at least 24 aircraft MiG-35, but in fact that aircraft was unavailable then. So Egypt decide to get MiG-29M/M2 in "Syrian" variant. Contract for 46 aircraft was signed in April 2015.

Egyptian MiGs have less modern radar than MiG-35: Zhuk-ME instead delayed Zhuk-AE (Phazotron NIIR), but have T220/E targeting pod and OLS-UE infrared/electro-optical sensor (produced by NPK SPP), slightly downgraded than Russian OLS-UE.

Production is easy, so in April 2017 was ready aircraft MiG-29M2 #811 (in sand-brown camouflage), in May 2017 aircraft MiG-29M #801 (unpainted, used by RSK-MiG) and MiG-29M #8704 (in lightgrey-grey camouflage), produced in Производственный комплекс № 1 «РСК «МиГ» в Луховицах (RSK MiG Production Facility No. 1, Lukhovitsy, Moskva). Firsts MiGs were delivered to Egypt very quickly - in September 2017.

Two-seater MiG-29M2 #811 for Egypt; April 2017. Airframe like 9-67, with air refueling probe. Drawing accuracy: 99% (I'm not sure area between fins).

One-seater MiG-29M2 #8704 for Egypt; May 2017. Airframe like 9-61, with air refueling probe. Final version of camouflage. Drawing accuracy: 100%.

MiG-29M and MiG-29M2 aka MiG-35 ana MiG-35S for Russian Aerospace Forces (BKC Воздушно-космические силы Российской Федерации), since 2017

MiG-29M/M2, even often called MiG-35, found only one foreign customer: Egypt, after ten years of aircraft development.

Final, fully equipped version of product 9-61/67 should become MiG-35 (oh no, again) prepared for Russian Air Force in 2016 and show to public in January 2017. It's two aircraft: #702 from October 2016 and #712 from December 2016. Since January and December 2017 were producent's trials conducted, state trials begins in January 2018. Serial production is expected in 2019 in Нижегородский завод «Сокол» (Nizhnyi Novgorod Airrcaft Plant Sokol [means 'Falcon']).

Although the prototypes were ready in 2017, serial production has not yet started. By summer 2020, only 5 aircraft were built - one MiG-29M2 in April 2019 (bort number 11) and four aircraft, probably at the end of 2019 or early 2020 (MiG-29M called MiG-35S: 10, 14, 15, and MiG-29M2 called MiG-35UB with number 12. Of course number 13 was ommitted.).

12 March 2021 the newspaper "Krasnaya Zvezda", which is run by the Russian Defense Ministry, contains infographic saying MiGs-35S were supplied to the Russian Air Force and also is said that the delivery was carried out within the framework of the state defense order and the planes were delivered ahead of schedule.
Note: contract to supply six MiG-35s until 2023 was signed by Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko and Yuri Slyusar, head of the United Aircraft Corporation on 22 August 2018 at the Army-2018 forum. So, it's only simply not really new MiGs but only five MiGs-35 produced in 2019 and 2020, now called Su-35S.
