Product 9-53 it's a double-seater training version of MiG-29SMT 9-18, 9-19 and 9-19R, also MiG-29UPG 9-20 called upgraded (or modernized) UB. Often is called simply MiG-29UB. Aircraft for India and Russia sometimes are distinguished by suffixes I for Indian and R for Russian. I dont't have no idea if that are official designations.

9-53 MiG-29UB it's a upgrade of serial 9-51 to SMT standard. Has the same weapons as MiG-29SMT, avionics and cockpit, but no radar and no possibility to use a radar homing weapons. Don't have dorsal fuel tanks, have in-flight refuelling probe. Are produced by Sokol in Nizhniy Novgorod.

2004-2005 Yemen: two UB modernized to 9-53.
2006-2007 Algeria: six UB modernized to 9-53, since 2009-2010 in service of Russian Air Force
since 2011 India: up to eight upgraded 9-53
2015-2016 Russia: two new 9-53

About 2012 old MiG-29UB #139 owned by RSK MiG was upgraded to 9-53R standard and used for trials before starts production of new batch for Russian Air Force.

Best joke of last years. Ordinary MiG-29UB 9-51 painted like 9-53. Owned by RSK MiG, until 2015 it was a flying advertisement of Russian Television Channel One. Overhaul done in 2016.
